Central Plains Water Limited (CPWL) is a SMART Irrigation scheme.
Why?
- Over time Central Plains Water Limited (CPWL) will shift farmers away from environmentally sensitive groundwater to more sustainable surface water resources, supported by water storage
- By managing the nutrient and farm management practices of its shareholders, the scheme has a huge opportunity to deliver widespread environmental benefits for the district
- Managing nutrient losses as a collective will significantly reduce the levels of nitrate-nitrogen, sediment and phosphorous being lost to local waterways and Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere
- Farmers accessing water from the scheme will be required to exclude stock from waterways and wetlands and protect native plants, animals and habitats on their properties. Irrigation application must be highly efficient and all irrigation systems connected to the scheme will need to meet industry and CPWL standards
